Calling All Women!
Tuesday, January 24, 2017
I’m a woman. I’m a wife. I’m a mother. I’m a Marine.
Like so many other women, I wear many hats. I am proud to serve in these many roles as they show that women are not only versatile, but also powerful.
That’s why in 2017, I’m outraged that women still do not have the rights they deserve and are not respected for the enormous roles they serve in our society. I’m alarmed that some may not view women an in particular LGBT women, like myself, as important in the service to our country. I’m enraged, and quite frankly appalled, that the son of our new National Security Advisor has publicly stated that women are only fighting for “free mani's and pedi's.” Statements like these are what demonstrate a complete disregard for our basic rights as human beings.
In spite of this, it is empowering to see so many women across our country come together and stand up for equality this past weekend. I’m invigorated that so many of our American people do view LGBT, people of color (in particular women) and women’s rights as human rights, no matter who is in power in our government. As a mom to young boys, it is scary to think that they will be exposed to the mindset that the LGBT women are inferior or their rights do not matter. This is why I’m thankful that my sons may still have the opportunity to grow up in a world that says women deserve equal treatment, no matter their sexual orientation or gender identity.
However, we must still remain vigilant. That’s why OutServe-SLDN is calling on us to stand up for all women, including LGBT+ women. It does not matter if you are straight, lesbian, or bi or if you are a cis, trans, or a non-binary woman, your rights matter.
How can you stand up for women today?
1. Contact your U.S. Senator or Representative and tell them that you want them to support the rights of women in our military and veterans population, especially our LGBT women. It just takes a quick minute to write a message, but it really does make a difference! You can find your Senator here (https://www.senate.gov/senators/contact/) or your Representative here (http://www.house.gov/representatives/find/).
2. If you are or if you know of an LGBT woman facing discrimination in our military or veteran communities, get in touch with our legal services department (https://www.outserve-sldn.org/?page=legal). We will do everything we can to help you or that person.
3. Get involved in one of our local OutServe-SLDN chapters in your community or installation. Through our chapters you can help support other women who may be facing discrimination and work on a local level to bring about change. To find one of our chapters, you can go here (https://www.outserve-sldn.org/?page=CONUSChapters).
OutServe-SLDN is committed to the protecting the rights of our LGBT women, whether active duty, reserves, guard, veteran, or family member. We hope that you all will stand with us in this fight. As LGBT+ women, we truly are “Stronger. Together.”
