Outserve-SLDN joins amicus in support of Lambda Legal’s cert petition to the Supreme Court in Evans v. Georgia Regional Hospital

(WASHINGTON) October 11, 2017 – Yesterday, OutServe-SLDN joined with 10 other organizations including the Human Rights Campaign, GLAD, NCLR and SAGE in an amicus brief to the Supreme Court in support of Evans v. Georgia Regional Hospital. The brief can be read here.

The petition, brought by Lambda Legal, is asking the U.S. Supreme Court to review the case of Jameka Evans, a Savannah security guard who was harassed at work and forced from her job because she is a lesbian. The petition seeks a nationwide ruling that sexual orientation discrimination violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act.

Matt Thorn, Executive Director of OutServe-SLDN issued the following statement upon the amicus brief filing:

“We are proud to join our colleagues with an amicus brief in support of Lambda Legal’s cert petition to the Supreme Court. We, as a nation, cannot and should never tolerate harassment or termination from employment on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity. Workplaces should be safe, equitable  and inclusive. We stand with Lambda Legal as they fight to end workplace discrimination for LGBTQ people and those living with HIV. It is time that we finally have a ruling that discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation is a violation of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act. The Supreme Court must take this case as our political representation has made it clear they do not care to address this unjust and fundamental problem in our nation’s laws.”
