Friends -

Earlier today we had a presentation on How to Support Transgender Service Members by Blake Dremann, President of SPART*A and an active-duty Navy Lieutenant Commander. As we renew our commitment to fighting for and supporting transgender service members, we must remember that transgender veterans are also facing challenges.

Right now, the VA is considering a rule change to remove the exclusion on transition-related health care from their medical benefits package. This means we have the opportunity to tell the VA that we stand by our transgender siblings, and that they deserve access to medically necessary care.

There are currently more than 600 comments on this topic, and unfortunately many of them are negative. We need to make our voices heard, and to let the VA and the Trump-Pence administration know that we support transgender veterans.

We are asking you to support transgender veterans by submitting a comment today.

It is important that you use your own words when submitting a comment, but here are some important points you can use:

  • All eligible veterans deserve medically necessary care.
  • It is wrong to single out any group of veterans to deny medical care.
  • The VA's exclusion is hurting veterans who have served their country, harming their health and in some cases putting their lives at risk.
  • Medical decisions should be made by medical professionals based on current standards of care.

If you're a transgender service member or veteran, or if you have a connection to transgender individuals through work or personal relationships, we encourage you to touch on those experiences by:

  • Discussing how you have seen or experienced the benefits of medical treatment for gender dysphoria, and
  • Discussing how you have seen or experienced the harms of denying access to medical treatment for gender dysphoria

Please share this and encourage others to comment through the September 7 deadline. Thank you for your support!

In Solidarity,
Kai River Blevins

P.S. Please consider becoming a monthly contributor. These contributions that we can count on every month provide a steady foundation to ensure we can keep fighting for our LGBT servicemembers, veterans, and their families. Thank you.
